| Alaska and an event that rocked the world. In the katmai valley of the area around kodiak, in the summer of 1912
occurred an eruption ten times the size of the eruption of mount saint Helen's. The force
and magnitude of this event was so incredible, it caused a mountain to disappear and
another to rise within a matter of minutes. The name "ten thousand smokes" is
attributed to the smoke coming from the areas of this event. the URL listed here will
